Environment Education at Urban Area
Interpreting Insect Diversity in the Insect Museum
(Insect Museum at the Indonesian Miniature Garden, Jakarta – Indonesia)
One scope of our environmental education work is Insect Interpreting – a joint program developed by PEKA and the Insect Museum at the Indonesian Miniature Garden. Our goal is to improve the insect guide system and interpreting activities in the museum. Therefore we conduct training for the insect museum interpreter.
The insect interpreting program includes several activities. I.e. (1) volunteers working as interpreter for insect interpreting, (2) developing insect displays in the museum. The aim of these activities is to inform the visitors of the insect museum about the roles and functions of insects in different ecosystems and why we have to contribute programs and activities regarding insect conservation in Indonesia.
Integrating Environment Education and Student Programs at School
Case Study : Schools at Bogor City
This program is the result of collaboration from PEKA Indonesia with several schools in Bogor, includingplanting tree program SD (Elementary School) Babakan Sari and SMP (Junior High School) PGRI Ciampea, Bogor.
Teachers in school use education methods, which are recommended by the National Education Department. The objective of PEKA Indonesia is to integrate and combine our environmental education program with these formal education programs. In environmental education NATURE is the underlying learning object and the students can experience its benefit everyday, as we bring them into direct interaction with nature. Beside those, outdoor activities have an extra value because of their special manner. They help students to gather knowledge about the environment by interacting and experiencing for themselves and so increase their consciousness of being close to nature.
The combination of school lessons and environmental education methods gives the students the possibility to integrate the lessons with their experiences in nature.
Increasing the concern for environment and nature of urban populations by informing students about biodiversity and the role of insects in ecosystems
By running this program, PEKA Indonesia collaborated with the Museum Serangga and the Taman Akuarium Air Tawar (TAAT). Both institutions are part of the Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII).
Presentations of the Environmental Education Program at Several Schools in Jakarta, Bogor and Bekasi
Presentations of the environmental education program have been conducted in several schools in Bogor, Bekasi and Jakarta. Following five schools in Bogor (SMPN I Bogor, SMP PGRI Ciampea, SMP Al Azhar Plus, SMP Paramitha, SDN Babakan Sari), three schools in Jakarta (Junior High School SMPN 81, SMPN 49, SMP Angkasa) and two schools in Bekasi (SMPN I Bekasi, SMP Al Azhar Jaka Permai) join the environmental education program of PEKA Indonesia now.
The programs purpose is to give students the basic elements for respecting and protecting the nature by giving the possibility to enjoy and experience it. In these presentations PEKA Indonesia provides an introduction into fish morphology and water characteristics as well as in insects and their habitats e.g. how to initiate conservation action. Other activities like presentations, discussions, watching the environmental education movie and insect observation are conducted to support the program.
