Community Development
Peka Indonesia gives special attention to a model of inovated approach in addressing nature conservation. We choose to concentrate to develop lokal scale model and highlighting the important of local community involvement. Since 2000 we have facilitated groups of farmer in Karangwang, Subang and Halimun (West Java) area to promote sustainable farming and plant pest and disease management. While for the past 5 years (2002 – 2007) with the support of Unocal Foundation and UNDP Small Grant Programme to Promote Tropical Forest we have developed community based nature conservation project in forest corridor of Mount Salak Halimun, West Java.
Together with the community, we initiated the forest corridor community network as a local institution that tackles the issues of community based conservation and management of forest corridor. As a supporting system for community movement, Peka Indonesia deeply concern in developing inovative model and approaches which empower the community capacity to manage natural resources in sustainable way which would lead to livelihood enhancement.
As an institution, We try to link our work with the local community with global trend of environmental issues, especially on the aspect of biodiversity conservation, ecosystem health, and poverty reduction. Peka Indonesia had involved in one of United Nation Task Force for the Millenium Development Goals Project, specifically the Task Force for Environmental Sustainabilities.
Above all, what we have found the most valuable for us is our emotional bonds with the local community of Mount Salak Halimun. Our program are to support the forest corridor community network to implement conservation actions within the forest corridor area and to leverage the livelihood quality of the community. The network has design strategy to link farming as a back bone for food security with conservation of biodiversity. While the community of Mount Salak Halimun believes that conserved forest will give prosperity to the community, we also believes that biodiversity conservation can go hands in hands with community development.
